"I have started to experiment with materials and techniques to make a new body of work. It started this spring. My intent was to stay positive in this hard time, with so many people dead and dying and political divisiveness. As I walked through my neighborhood, I noticed the empty streets as people stayed indoors for fear of catching COVID-19. At the same time, the trees were budding and blooming. There was this eerie scene of cherry blossoms floating in the empty city streets. I caught some of the blossoms and made sketches. These sketches grew into woodblock prints. I am learning how to make water-based prints from home, using Japanese Mokuhanga techniques. I hope that these prints show all of this—my learning how to get the colors and textures right, this strange spring as well as personal narratives I wrote into the prints."
