Art Matters at Camargo

All disciplines

About the Program

This artist residency opportunity is a partnership between Art Matters, Jerome Foundation and the Camargo Foundation, which provides artists time to think, create and reflect; learn from other artists and scholars; and connect with resources and opportunities in the Provence region in France. Four artists are selected through a call for Art Matters and Jerome grantees to participate in month-long residencies at Camargo Foundation.

  • For artists of all disciplines
  • Next call: summer 2018
  • Goals: research / experimentation / production

About the Partner

Art Matters, a 30-year-old non-profit foundation, began as the brainchild of philanthropist Laura Donnelley and educator Philip Yenawine who wanted to assist artists struggling to say something with bite and punch, artists who made "art that mattered." The foundation awards grants to U.S. artists working in contemporary art and performance for ongoing work or projects that engage social justice issues and experiment with form. Art Matters supports artists whose work breaks ground aesthetically and socially.

Eligibility

Applicants must be Art Matters grantees (2007-2015) or grantees of the Jerome Foundation’s Travel and Study Grant Program or Film, Video and Digital Production Grant Program (2009-2015). Individual artists, artist teams, and collectives are eligible to apply, working in all disciplines. Four artists are offered a four-week residency at the Camargo Foundation every year. Given the limited number of residencies, artists who have already received an Art Matters & Jerome Foundation at Camargo residency are not eligible to reapply.

Stipend

Each residency, whether awarded to an individual or an artist team, will include a total stipend of US $5,300 to cover honoraria, travel, food, per diem, materials, and any other expenses.

Length

December 2018 through November 2019, during which the Camargo Foundation will host a total of four residencies. The residencies will be one month in duration, with exact dates determined by the artist recipient and Camargo Foundation staff.
