Thalassa, Thalassa !

In 2024

As part of the Résonnance à Plateforme10 program, mudac wishes to respond to the exhibition Thalassa! Thalassa! L’imaginaire de la mer, organized by the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (MCBA), by commissioning a sound installation.

To do so, mudac approached the artist, musician and sound landscaper, Olga Kokcharova, born in Siberia and based in Geneva. The latter is interested in everything that is audible, regardless of the medium. She works with analog modular synthesizers and field recordings, favoring meticulous sound recording but also experimenting in circumstances where the recording equipment is put to the test. These sources are then worked on with a view to compositions, multichannel electroacoustic improvisations, soundtracks, or even sound installations in public spaces. In order to be as close as possible to the liquid element that is questioned by the MCBA exhibition, mudac has decided to send Olga Kokcharova for two months to the Camargo Foundation, an artist residency located in Cassis on the Mediterranean coast. There, she will be able to develop her project, which is conceptually based on the different interpretations of the sound of the sea inside a shell. There will be no spoken language, but an intention to make felt, by exploiting the physicality of sound and relying on psychoacoustic effects, the evolutions of the perception of the soundscape of the sea seen from the contemporary European perspective.
