"I explore historical relationships between Jacquard tapestries and photo-based representations of black masculinity. Use of tapestries draws material and conceptual connections between media’s distorted representations of black men and weaving. Physical acts of sanding, brushing, dyeing, and collaging, address conceptual concerns of the image’s stability and meaning. Textile is deployed to address the entanglement of social and political discourses circumscribing black masculine forms. I seek to spotlight the complexities of attempting to define black male subjects through surface and corporeality."
