Escales

Escales residencies offer artists, scholars and thinkers time and space to work on their project without production expectations or obligations. This creates an environment conducive to intellectual exploration and creative experimentation, fostering an atmosphere of support and stimulation for the residents' projects and ideas.

Camargo x The Racial Imaginary Institute

Since 2026

This residency program was developed through our partnership with the Racial Imaginary Institute, a multidisciplinary platform engaging with art and scholarship to examine race's role and impact in contemporary life. Together, we share a commitment to supporting artists whose practices engage critically and creatively with questions of race, identity, and social imagination.

The program offers six artists based in the United States a six-week funded residency at Camargo in Cassis, France — a contemplative environment overlooking the Mediterranean, free from political pressures and production obligations. Working within an international context, resident artists are given the time and space to develop their practice, pursue new directions, and connect with a diverse community of artists and thinkers.

Each resident benefits from guidance and networking opportunities provided jointly by Camargo and the Racial Imaginary Institute, whose combined networks span the arts, academia, and cultural institutions across the United States and beyond.

Artists were selected through a nomination process. This program is made possible in partnership with the Swell Foundation and the Pittsburgh Opportunity Fund.

Habiter le monde

Since 2026

Camargo and the Fondation Louis Roederer come together at the crossroads of shared concerns: support for artistic practices that interrogate the environmental history of our societies, our relationship to the living world, habitability and climate transformation.

This residency offers artists, writers and thinkers a period of work and reflection at Camargo, in Cassis, a contemplative environment overlooking the Mediterranean, away from political pressures and production obligations. In a resolutely international context, residents are given the time and space necessary to deepen their practice and explore new directions.

For this inaugural edition, we are welcoming Amitav Ghosh, an Indian novelist, leading thinker on ecology and one of the most important voices in contemporary English-language literature. He is the author of The Shadow Lines (Prix Médicis étranger, 1990) and Sea of Poppies (2010), among others. At the close of his residency, an evening of encounter and exchange around his work and ideas will be held at the Camargo Foundation.
