Yasmin Joseph is a London-based writer. Her debut play J’ouvert premiered at Theatre503 in 2019 and at the Harold Pinter Theatre as part of Sonia Friedman’s 2021 RE:EMERGE season. She was nominated for the Evening Standard’s Most Promising Playwright Award and most recently won the 2020 James Tait Black Prize For Drama. She is the current writer-in-residence at Sister Pictures and is on attachment at the Royal Court Theatre as a winner of the Channel 4 Playwrights scheme. Yasmin is also under commission with Clean Break, Soho Theatre and The Actors Touring Company.

When colonial forces first trampled their muddy boots onto Caribbean shores, they carried with them the violent load of their ideologies. One of their most forceful impositions were the efforts to contain Black peoples’ spirit. Using the power of Caribbean folklore, Joseph’s project will question the politics of magic and witchcraft, and the spell of imperialist belief that encourages trust when a white man pulls a rabbit from a hat but incites fear when a Black woman howls at the moon.
