Mathapelo Mofokeng is a writer from Johannesburg. She has written short stories, audio drama’s, television, and short films on a range of themes. Her writing has appeared in Gagosian Quarterly, Adda, Popshot Quarterly, and has been anthologised in the Catapult Best Short Stories Anthology, and The Future of Media. She is a recipient of the PEN America Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize, and has received fellowships from MacDowell Artist Residency, Miles Morland, and Chevening. She is a graduate of the Goldsmiths MA Scriptwriting programme.

Project
A literary work that draws inspiration from the historical events of South Africa, namely the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where Black women participated in a public performance of forgiveness for the human rights violations against their male family members. The stories combine archival research with
fictional narrative, influenced by Saidiya Hartman’s practice of “critical fabulation”. The themes in the book include: ancestral grief and the inseparability of past, present, and future; nationalism, women & erasure
