Katie Holten is a visual artist. Drawing is her primary research tool in visualizing the challenges of the Anthropocene. She grew up in Ireland and studied Fine Art and History of Art at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, the Hochschule der Kunst in Berlin, and Cornell University in New York. She recently studied Complexity at the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico. Katie represented Ireland at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. She has had solo museum exhibitions at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, The Bronx Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, and Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

During her residency at Camargo, Katie Holten further developed her Stone Alphabet project, an attempt to create a language beyond the human. A member of Generation Anthropocene, Holten believes there is a vital need for pioneering research to visualise and help solve the challenges affecting interconnected systems of society and ecosystems. Drawing is Holten’s tool. She attempted to draw out an "unconscious alphabet" from the Karst landscape of the Calanques. Stones leak layers of infinite knowledge. Reading and writing the stones, Holten returned to earliest forms of human communication, drawing out history, stories, lines, and letters.
