Arturas Bumšteinas

Sound Artist, Lithuania

Arturas Bumšteinas (born 1982 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian artist who works at the intersection of sound, music and art. His practices can be divided into three categories: music, sound installations and theater pieces (but there is also, of course, radio art). In the late 90's Arturas started using the internet to collect sounds from people around the world and make collages from these voluntary submissions (another take on sampling?). He is the initiator of various musical projects and since 2000 he has collaborated with different artists such as Anton Lukoszevieze, Vladimir Tarasov, Krystian Lupa, Žilvinas Kempinas, Gintautas Trimakas, Lina Lapelytė, Vaiva Grainytė, Laura Garbštienė, Piotr Kurek, Ivan Cheng...  Arturas' projects have been presented in various venues in Europe and his "solo" exhibitions have taken place at the Vilnius Contemporary Art Center, Vartai Gallery, AV17, Antje Wachs Berlin Gallery and various residencies in Europe.

Presentation of a pilot version of the music creation project "More Music for Jonas"

August 24, 2021 at 7 pm at the Camargo Foundation

Arturas Bumšteinas is invited to Camargo in partnership with the Lithuanian Culture Institute as part of the centenary of the birth of Lithuanian filmmaker Jonas Mekas (1922 - 2019), a great figure of experimental cinema. During his residency, Bumšteinas works on More Music for Jonas, a sound creation project inspired by the films of the Lithuanian filmmaker, and in particular Notes for Jerome (1978). Shot in the 1960s and 1970s in Cassis during several stays at the home of Jerome Hill, American artist and founder of Camargo, this film-elegy speaks of exile and refers to the Lithuanian wind. Inspired by the film’s soundtrack, Bumšteinas invites three musicians from the Ensemble C Barré (clarinet, trumpet and percussion) to reinterpret and «inhabit» the film’s sound material with their instruments, but also with their «amateur» voices.
